Before a channel is repeatable, customer acquisition is usually manual. That is a feature: founder-led outreach gives you direct contact with the language, objections, and buying process your later marketing must encode.
Set the list criteria
Use your ideal customer profile to define five observable filters: account type, size or complexity, trigger, role, and exclusion. Build a researched list of 50 accounts that fit those filters now.
Add a short reason for each account: a job posting, new executive, product launch, funding event, technology change, or public statement that suggests the problem is timely.
Start with the warm edge
Map customers, former colleagues, investors, vendors, community peers, and friends who can make a credible introduction. Name the specific person or profile you want to meet.
Warm does not mean casual. Send a forwardable note that states who you help, the situation you are researching, and the small ask.
Write a useful cold note
A good first message is short:
- a real observation about the recipient;
- the problem or trigger you believe is relevant;
- one sentence of credibility or context; and
- a low-friction question.
Do not manufacture intimacy. Do not hide a sales ask behind “picking your brain.” Relevance beats cleverness.
Run a two-week cadence
Contact a manageable number each day so you can research and respond well. Follow up two or three times with new information: a useful observation, a relevant example, or a simpler question.
Track only what you will use: account, contact, reason now, message, status, objection, and next action. Review replies by segment and message every few days.
Turn calls into commitments
End each useful conversation with a specific next step: product session, technical review, paid pilot proposal, internal introduction, or a clear no. Afterward, write down the customer’s words and update the next outreach batch.
You are done when
- The list contains 50 qualified accounts with a “why now.”
- At least 20 personal messages have been sent.
- Follow-ups are scheduled before the first reply arrives.
- Every conversation ends with a dated next step.
- You can explain which segment and message earn the best responses.
