Send a useful investor update

Write a concise monthly note that keeps supporters informed and makes your asks easier to help with.

An investor update is an operating tool. It creates a record of the company’s trajectory and gives informed supporters a chance to help while the need is still timely.

Keep the structure stable

Use the same sections each month:

  1. Headline: one sentence on the most important change.
  2. Numbers: a small set of consistently defined metrics with prior-period comparison.
  3. Wins: two or three meaningful developments.
  4. Challenges: the real constraints or misses.
  5. Focus: what the company is prioritizing next.
  6. Asks: specific, forwardable requests.

The update should take a few minutes to read. Link to supporting detail and keep the full board deck separate.

Explain the numbers

Report measures relevant to the current stage and define them consistently. Add one sentence about why a change happened and what the team is doing in response. Vanity metrics without decisions create noise.

Make honest challenges useful

State what happened, why you believe it happened, and the next action. Investors cannot help with a problem they cannot see. Honest does not mean unstructured; show command of the response.

Write requests people can forward

“Introductions to customers” is weak. Try:

We would value introductions to US-based heads of support at B2B software companies with 50–250 employees who recently implemented Salesforce. Here is a forwardable note.

Include the target, reason, and easy next step. Keep the number of asks small.

Send on a predictable date

Assign one owner, reuse the template, and send even when the month was difficult. Keep sensitive details appropriate for the audience and use secure links where needed.

You are done when

  • Metrics are comparable with the prior update.
  • Wins and challenges are both specific.
  • The next focus is narrow.
  • Every ask can be acted on or forwarded.
  • The next send date is on the calendar.
